A Polaroid with the bill
Somewhere between the mains and dessert, someone takes a Polaroid of your table. It comes back with the bill, yours to keep.

How it goes here
Nobody wrote them down. They just happen at every table, and it's what the reviews remember.
Somewhere between the mains and dessert, someone takes a Polaroid of your table. It comes back with the bill, yours to keep.
for the fridge door
A small glass of port, or a local liqueur, before you go. No one asks for it; it simply arrives.
saúde!
The fridge by the counter holds what the women of the house baked: chocolate delícias, pineapple and coconut tiramisu, flan, mango mousse.

Who's in the room
A Nova Estrela is a small family restaurant on Rua do Poço Novo, a short walk from the crowded streets of Cascais' centre and a world away from them. A few tables inside, a couple outside, a dessert fridge by the counter.
Dona Rosa runs the room. She explains the menu, tells you which condiment goes on what and, more often than not, talks you into the cod gratin. Between tables she sits back down to her sewing. Her son and a small team serve; the desserts are made by the women of the house.
Guests write that it feels like a friend's mother cooked for you. One family has been coming back every holiday since 2022.
She took our order with warmth and a genuine smile, and then… went back to sewing! That moment said everything.

Fish of the day
Exactly what we were looking for in Cascais: a real neighbourhood place, one street away from the tourist strip, and completely packed. Warm, unhurried service and prices that feel almost unfair for this quality.

Bacalhau gratin
We've been coming to Nova Estrela since 2022 and it never disappoints! The staff always go out of their way to make our kids feel special with balloons and treats.

Octopus
The octopus was the best I've ever had! So tender and melt in your mouth. And the garlic potatoes were perfectly garlicky.

Cod gratin
It felt like your friend's mum cooked you a hearty meal at home. It is that good! We literally emptied every single plate brought before us.
Ed T.
Gluten-free
A special thank you for the care they showed regarding gluten-free food. My mum has coeliac disease, and the team was very knowledgeable and made sure she could enjoy her meal safely.

Delícias de chocolate
The delicias de chocolate, the best lava cake ever, was amazing! Dª Rosa is a very nice lady that surprises you all the time.
Heloisa T.
Port & Polaroid
A free glass of port and a polaroid picture to remember our time were wonderful touches. I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu.

Cod
The cod dish wasn't something we originally ordered but the lovely lady kinda pushed it on us and we were sooooo happy she did.

Very. There are simple dishes for little ones, like fish and chips, and usually a treat at the end.
Octopus à lagareiro, the cod gratin with broa, or the fish of the day. And leave room for the chocolate delícias.
Yes, call ahead and we'll have it ready.
Monday to Saturday, 12:00 to 15:30 and 18:30 to 21:30. Closed on Sunday.
